Four Coaching Passes that Maximize the Benefit of Any Profile

“Sober estimation”.

“Honest evaluation”.

“Think about yourself properly”.

“Set your mind to be right minded”.

“Think reasonably”.

Different translations of a phrase from Romans 12:3 all point to a vital part of coaching people who are taking any kind of “fill in the answers, get a score” profile.  As coaches, we are to help people get a more complete picture of themselves than just a numerical score.

No matter where people are in their profile, you can apply a simple coaching process to help them discern and discover the best picture of who and how God made them.  We call the process our “Four Coaching Passes”.

“No matter where people are in their profile, you can apply a simple coaching process to help them discern and discover the best picture of who and how God made them.”

“No matter where people are in their profile, you can apply a simple coaching process to help them discern and discover the best picture of who and how God made them.”

 The Four Coaching Passes are:

1. Review the report.  Let the report speak.  The reports are powerful, but sometimes need to be read more than once for better understanding.  Some organizations use their own language to describe their findings.  You may need to do some “translating” in that regard.

2. Reflect on your experiences.  Personalize what’s on paper.  What does this look like in your life?  How would you describe this in your own words?  What stories are examples from your life?

3. Receive(d) feedback.  What have others said TO you or ABOUT you that give us a better picture of you?

4. Respond to the Spirit.  What is the Lord saying to you about this? What action steps might He want you to take? Listen and pray…trust and obey.

The results of any profile will have greater impact when you go beyond the numbers…this “four pass” approach to coaching will invite discovery, personalization, confirmation from others, and fresh opportunities to hear from the Lord.

The power of these four coaching passes is their simplicity and reproducibility.  You can use them anytime and anywhere you are coaching people.  Try them…and watch your coaching become more productive!

Coach Yourself Forward

1. What kind of profiles have you taken?  What was your experience trying to understand them by yourself?  What kind of coaching did you receive, if any? What would have helped you have a better experience?

2. As you look at the four coaching passes, what advantages do you see?  How would that help people get a better picture of themselves?

3. Next time you have a chance to coach someone through a profile, use the four passes.  Pay attention to what happens…watch the Lord bring greater clarity!
